Get to know… David Craven

What do you do at MRG?

I recruit within Public Sector Estates, focusing on the Higher Education Sector in the North of England. I work with quite a few of the universities across the North, assisting in the development and addition of their estates and facilities teams.

What are you most proud about that you have achieved in your career to date?

I’m not sure proud is the right word, but I am certainly pleased I have been able to evolve as a consultant, as the recruitment sector has developed, acting as a genuine advisor and consultant to both clients and candidates alike.

How did you get into Property and Estates recruitment and why?

I have always recruited into the property industry (21 years this April) but working directly with the Higher Education sector was something I had the opportunity to undertake when joining MRG.  It has been a revelation. I love the sector. It has its challenges, but it is a wholly enjoyable experience.

What energises you about working in this sector?

I love working with universities; the diversity, characters, architecture, locations, and how well you are treated, all make it a rewarding sector to work in. Visiting the variety of universities over the years has been a genuine pleasure.  I need to visit more now we are able!

What’s the biggest thing that’s changed in recruitment since you started?

Having worked in recruitment for over 20 years, technology has changed massively.  Originally sending out CVs by fax or post! What hasn’t changed is that relationships are key in how you progress and succeed.   In my first role in recruitment, I was constantly reminded about the importance of building relationships within the Property Sector, and it has helped immeasurably.  I’m always keen on a coffee and a chat!

What do you think the biggest misconception people have about you is?

That I’m serious all the time.  Nothing could be farther from the truth!

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?

I spend most of my free time coaching rugby union and have done for ten years. Currently with my Junior Colts at Liverpool St Helens, and the Sale Sharks Development Player Programme.
I’ve just started coaching CrossFit too!

What’s the best advice anyone has every given you?

My dad constantly kept busy, whether in work, or at home, and he always instilled in me, hard work pays off.  He was always right!! And more recently as I’ve matured, it is certainly to make sure you treat people how you want to be treated.

What three words would your colleagues use to describe you?

Serious, Dedicated and Thorough.

And finally, who would play you in the movie about your life?

Someone said Mark Wahlberg.
