Get to know… Davina Cooper

What do you do at MRG?

I am the Country Director of our new Middle East office in Saudi Arabia. We serve existing clients and expand our footprint in the GCC.

What are you most proud of that you have achieved in your career?

I first moved to the UAE in 2004 – there was no Burj Khalifa, JBR, JLT, no Business Bay, barely a marina and the defence roundabout was just a roundabout! The list can go on  – a lot of talent was sourced internationally, and I was delighted to recruit candidates for these iconic projects from around the world for international contractors, consultants, and developers; back then, people were not really sure where Dubai was, so it was great to get them on the journey. Seeing these projects start from nothing and then be completed was so impressive.  I then had my own business in the UAE for just over 10 years.  Fast forward, and I am doing it all on a much larger scale in Saudi Arabia with MRG.

What’s the biggest thing that has changed in recruitment since you started?

When I first started recruitment in the UK, we used to fax CVs! So a lot has changed, the biggest being data and how much we have access to now, how to organise it, and how to make the most out of it.  There are a lot of platforms out there now and much easier access to talent.  However, I still have my little black book, and I believe that the people factor of recruitment will never disappear.

How did you get into recruitment in the Middle East Market?

I grew up riding Arabian horses, a passion sparked by my grandad, who bred them for racing. I believe this sparked my interest in the region.

Years later, as an adult, I began working in Middle East recruitment from the UK. However, I quickly realised that connecting with people remotely, was not effective. So, I took a leap of faith and flew to the UAE. Three days after landing, I secured a job with BBT, a construction and engineering recruitment company.

Since 2004, the Middle East has been my home.

What’s the one thing people don’t know about you?

I am deaf in one ear, and I only discovered this the other day.

How would your colleagues describe you in three words?

Energetic, Determined and Direct

What’s the best advice anyone has given you?

You will get to a “yes” as soon as you get through the “no’s”.

Who would play you in a movie?

Kelly Reily
