We spoke with MRG Board Member Matthew Evans following his promotion to Managing Director, International. Discover how his new role aligns with MRG’s global ambitions, while he will still be keeping a strong focus on the UK private sector.
How will your new role impact UK private sector clients?
From a UK perspective, nothing changes. I remain fully committed to delivering outstanding results for our UK clients through our detailed search process and innovative recruitment solutions. While my new role expands internationally, focusing on consistent delivery across geographies and growing our presence in Asia and the Middle East, my foundation will always be in the UK market.
What interests you about real estate?
It’s the momentum of change; the very nature of real estate is outward-looking, fast-paced, collaborative and of course, global. A clear example of this was during a recent trip to Riyadh, where I attended an Opportunity London dinner. The event brought together leaders from the UK and the Middle East, where the UK’s expertise was spotlighted on an international stage. These events really create and strengthen genuine relationships and open the door to global collaborations.
What excites you most about this expanded role?
Bringing the MRG way of working to new markets while respecting local cultures and nuances is hugely exciting.
The chance to continue working with our outstanding teams in diverse locations is right at the top of the list. I am naturally inquisitive and find learning about differences and similarities in working habits, motivations and culture incredibly interesting. Each location has fantastic people, and we have ensured the “MRG DNA” is embedded across every team while maintaining individuality. I feel lucky to have met so many inspiring and hardworking colleagues.
Over the past four to five years, I have gained a lot of knowledge and, I hope, grown professionally and personally. From a professional standpoint, the globalisation of the real estate market is increasingly important, and talent mobility is critical. The diversity of thought and debate I have experienced has helped shape a different perspective. Continuing this learning, embracing new ideas, overcoming challenges and working differently from how we do in the UK is exciting, as is bringing those insights back to the UK market.
I am really looking forward to enhancing client connectivity and promoting candidate mobility. It is a fantastic challenge, and I cannot wait to see our plans in action.
How does this new role reflect the company’s strategy for the future?
Our strategy and vision for MRG have been in place for several years. This new role represents both the culmination of years of growth, a reset and a fresh start.
Our aim is to build a balanced business on a three-legged stool, with equally strong operations in the UK, the Middle East and Asia.
The UK business is well-established and well-mandated but operates in a highly competitive environment. In the Middle East and Asia, we face different challenges. Asia is a fast-growing region with a growing population and a shortage of talent. The Middle East, and Saudi Arabia in particular, is earlier in its journey, with the 2030 Vision, the Men’s Football World Cup and ambitious plans creating a unique set of challenges.
We aim to work with both local and international clients, supporting SMEs in each geography as much as global players. I hope to join the dots between our regions, promote best practice and ensure our clients receive a service they can truly describe as excellent.
We remain focused on international growth, not only in our current locations but also by expanding our footprint over the coming years.
