MRG Recruitment Consultant Prerona Baishya shares with us her experience of returning to work after a career break.
Over the past few months, I’ve reflected a lot on what it means to step back into the corporate world after taking time away to prepare for something as demanding as the UPSC examinations.
From the outside, a career break can sometimes look like a pause in professional growth. But personally, I believe experiences like these shape individuals in ways that are difficult to capture on a resume. Preparing for UPSC requires discipline, consistency, resilience, adaptability and the ability to keep going even when the outcome is uncertain.
While the journey may not always lead everyone to the same destination, the process itself teaches valuable lessons such as managing pressure, staying committed to long-term goals and continuously learning and evolving.
Returning to corporate after such a break can feel challenging. There are questions around continuity, changing market expectations and rebuilding confidence in a fast-moving environment. However, I’ve realised that people returning after experiences like these often bring a stronger sense of perspective, sharper problem-solving abilities, and a renewed clarity towards their professional goals.
As someone working in recruitment, I feel it is important for us to look beyond gaps in timelines and focus more on the intent, learning and growth behind them. Careers are rarely linear anymore and unconventional journeys often create some of the most resilient professionals.
To anyone planning their return after a career break, please know that your journey still holds value. Sometimes, stepping away with purpose can help you come back stronger, more aware and more prepared for what lies ahead.
Personally, my transition back into corporate has been made much easier by the supportive and professional environment at MRG Global. Being part of a team that values collaboration and encouragement has made this journey feel both comfortable and meaningful.
