Leadership Ambition and Confidence in India’s Evolving Market

We caught up with Matthew Evans in London following his recent trip to Mumbai, where he spent the week meeting clients across development, contracting, consultancy and operating businesses. Fresh from the visit, he shared his reflections on the pace of market progress, evolving leadership expectations, and why on-the-ground time matters more than ever.

I spent last week in Mumbai meeting a variety of clients across development, contracting, consultancy and operating businesses. Every visit reinforces the same thing to me; the pace of progress is significant, but it’s grounded in delivery rather than hype.

What struck me most was how mature the conversations have become and how much has changed in the past five years. Capital structures are more sophisticated, partnership models are evolving, and many businesses are thinking well beyond domestic growth. There’s a noticeable confidence when it comes to expanding now only within India but into the Middle East and other international markets, and that ambition is being backed by investment in people.

The leadership briefs we discussed were also telling. The demand isn’t simply for experienced operators to maintain performance. Clients are looking for individuals who can build teams, introduce structure, manage complexity and engage credibly with global capital. There’s a clear expectation that senior hires add strategic value, not just functional capability.

It was also a great opportunity to spend proper time with our team on the ground. The quality, energy and professionalism of our team in Mumbai is something I’m hugely proud of. We’re building real depth there, and the plan is to keep investing and expanding as demand continues to grow.

Spending time in the market makes a real difference. Context matters — how decisions are made, how quickly businesses move, and how relationships shape outcomes. It’s difficult to advise properly without being present and having those conversations face-to-face.

At The Management Recruitment Group, we’ve continued to invest in being close to our clients for exactly that reason. The opportunities are substantial, and so is the competition for high-quality leadership.
