Get to know… Matt Giles

What is your role at MRG?

I am a Business Director based in Dubai, responsible for serving our existing clients across the GCC and continuing to develop our track record across the region.

I focus on Senior Management and Executive Level placements within development, construction delivery and estates & facilities management.

What are you most proud that you have achieved in your career?

I would say my ability to adapt to new ways of working and markets. I started my career in contingency recruitment before joining MRG in 2019, where I had the opportunity to learn retained search and deliver recruitment campaigns for some of the UK’s most iconic and prestigious estates.

Now I am In Dubai and experiencing new cultures, markets and opportunities.

How did you get into recruitment, and why?

Like many, I left University without knowing my next move. I had friends who had started in recruitment and were progressing well and enjoying the role. So, after getting a bit of advice and a recommendation, I joined a consultancy specialising in Property & Facilities Management.

What energises you about working in this sector?

The projects and estates I have been fortunate enough to recruit for include historic estates such as the UK Parliament, the University of Oxford, and the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew. To new-build skyscrapers 22 Bishopsgate, 40 Leadenhall and Giga-Projects in KSA.

What’s the biggest thing that’s changed in recruitment since you started?

The biggest change in recruitment over the past 12 years is the advancement of technology. Including online platforms, social media, data and now the introduction of AI.

However, the importance of building rapport with clients and candidates hasn’t changed.

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?

I played junior golf to a high standard, getting down to a four handicap. However, anyone who has seen me play recently might not believe me!

What three words would your colleagues use to describe you?

Competitive, Consistent, Calm

And finally, who would play you in the movie about your life?

Perhaps not an obvious fit to play me, but my favourite actor is Joaquin Phoenix.
