Get to know… Nena Kassim

What do you do at MRG?

I am the Business Director for Asia, leading the Corporate Real Estate desk. Responsible for crafting and executing robust business strategies that drive the creation of a dynamic new business pipeline. My expertise extends to recruiting top-tier talent, ranging from senior professionals to C-level executives.

What are you most proud about that you have achieved in your career to date?

Over the past three years, I have made remarkable strides in the energy and gas industry. I successfully established a business in Malaysia for an agency, taking complete control of operations—including P&L responsibilities. I spearheaded all sales activities and achieved an impressive 60% increase in annual revenue.

Additionally, I ventured into the Indonesian market for the mining industry, managing an entire contracting project that involved hiring 100 staff for plants in Sulawesi. In just 60 days, we achieved an outstanding 95% fill rate for these roles.

How did you get into recruitment and why?

I kickstarted my career in the banking sector as an internal HR professional, where I gained valuable insights into the recruitment process by working closely with agencies and recruiters. This experience ignited my passion for the industry, and I was particularly drawn to the enticing commission structure. That moment solidified my decision to dive into this field, and I’ve been thriving in it ever since!

What energises you about working in this sector?

Initially, my focus was solely on commissions and maximising my earnings. However, after a few years in the field, I discovered that true fulfilment comes from the job itself, far surpassing any monetary gain. This role has significantly enhanced my soft skills, allowing me to better understand and connect with clients and candidates.

What’s the biggest thing that’s changed in recruitment since you started?

Gone are the days of complex and manual recruitment processes. There are faster, simpler ways to apply for roles you are interested in. Recruitment companies have technical systems and databases that allow you to do just that. Manual processes may be involved in getting onto their systems, but even that is being streamlined.

Diversity in skill – while being a subject matter expert is still highly desirable, diversifying your skillset is becoming increasingly important. Education is essential for technical skills, but as a candidate, experience is just as vital.

Technology and Artificial Intelligence – even though the recruitment process is more automated, the personal aspect will never disappear. It is becoming increasingly important to potential new employees whose job satisfaction often hinges on company values, culture, and office environment

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?

From a young age, I envisioned myself as a fashion designer. Although the Malaysian market wasn’t fully prepared for my aspirations then, my passion for fashion has remained unwavering. I have honed my skills in sewing and design.

What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you?

Anything you are not changing, you’re choosing.

What three words would your colleagues use to describe you?

Loud, Assertive, Empathetic

And finally, who would play you in the movie about your life?

Monica Bellucci
